Introduction

University Lecture

Yaa Ahlan Wa Sahlan!

There is a common Iraqi saying “ المجتمع هو الحياة ” = “Society is life”. This saying underscores the importance of civic values that promote unity, cooperation and resound across generations as a reminder of the correlation of Iraqi society.

School lesson

At the same time, the phrase reveals the differences and distinctions that Iraqi society must continually work to bridge. It is this tension – between societal cohesion and contention – that has been a mainstay of Iraqi civic identity.

Since ancient times, Iraq has been shaped by many values that nurtured and strengthened social harmony and cooperation. From the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia to its present identity, Iraq's civic values embodied ideals that bind its people together, emphasizing unity, respect for diversity, active participation, and shared responsibility for the common good.
