Citizenship and Civic Responsibility

Introduction

Citizenship in Iraq extends beyond legal recognition, encompassing active participation in the country's social, political, and economic spheres. It provides individuals with a sense of belonging, identity, and legal protection, fostering social cohesion, democratic governance, and equality.

Iraqi citizens are encouraged to fulfil obligations by engaging in constructive dialogue, participating in decision-making, respecting the rule of law, and contributing to community welfare. Civic responsibility plays a pivotal role in nation-building, social justice, and accountable governance, involving citizens to advocate for positive change, respect others' rights, and promote inclusivity.

Prioritising collective welfare over individual interests is highlighted as a means to contribute to a more cohesive community. To help demonstrate what is at stake in civic responsibility and active citizenship, this section will include testimonies of ordinary Iraqi citizens and how they have navigated these rights and responsibilities.

"When I was growing up in Iraq, there was an unbroken belief in progress and a great sense of optimism. It was a moment of nation building."
