Soft Skills

Introduction

Soft skills, also known as people skills, are a person’s ability to communicate with each other effectively and work well together. While hard skills describe what we do, soft skills describe how we do it. These skills are essential in our everyday communication and particularly important in business contexts.

They reflect our convictions and work ethics. Empathy, e.g., increases each other’s appreciation, the willingness to listen openly and enhance understanding in heterogeneous business teams.

Emotional intelligence is helpful in responding to constructive criticism while mental agility ensures a continuous willingness to learn something new.

According to a report published in July 2023 by the Education Commission and UNICEF, nearly three quarters of youth aged 15-24 in 92 countries, including Iraq, are off-track in acquiring these skills needed for employment. In short, soft skills do not only promote meaningful communication and peaceful co-existence, they also open up sustainable job opportunities.
