The Malwiya Mosque
The Spiral Minaret of the Great Mosque in Samarra, known as the “Malwiya Mosque”, is a distinctive landmark in Iraq, thanks to its unique architectural style among the minarets of the Islamic world. The Malwiya minaret derives its name from its spiral cylindrical shape and stands as one of the finest constructions by the Abbasids, built between 848 and 852 CE.
The historical city of Samarra is situated on the banks of the Tigris River, approximately 130 kilometres north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
